A message from America West President, Doug Parker.
for US Airways
One of the many details of our merger with US Airways
is a new livery—that’s the airline term used to describe
an aircraft’s paint scheme. In August, the first aircraft
to be painted in the new US Airways livery emerged from the hangar,
and we flew the aircraft to our largest operating centers—Philadelphia;
Pittsburgh; Charlotte, N.C.; Las Vegas; and Phoenix—giving
thousands of employees a chance to see it. Dozens of employees
volunteered to travel with the plane, many of them wearing “retro” uniforms
to honor the past carriers that make the new US Airways what it
is today. I’m proud to say that the livery was designed entirely
in-house, saving us millions in consulting fees.
Since it might
be awhile before you see the new livery throughout our fleet—it
takes some time to paint several hundred airplanes—I’d
like to mention a few of its features. The new livery has elements
of both existing schemes, which will provide a complementary look
to the fleet as aircraft are repainted over several years. The top
of the aircraft will be painted in a lighter color—darker tones
have implications for cabin comfort during the summer months, especially
at our Las Vegas and Phoenix hubs. This will keep employees and customers
cooler and require less ground power for air conditioning, saving
the company money.
The feature I’m most proud of is what we
call the “Heritage
logo,” a collection of four icons from the four largest airlines
that make up the new US Airways—America West, Allegheny, PSA,
and Piedmont. For any merger to succeed, there must be a positive
integration of various working cultures, and many current employees
of the new US Airways started their aviation careers with different
airlines. The Heritage logo is a tribute to our individual pasts
and a reminder that we are joining together to create a brighter
future. It’s a future we hope you’ll be a part of. Thanks
for flying with us today, and keep an eye out for our new look.
