Buyers used to research through search, then land on your website to decide. Now AI answers them directly. We measure whether your content contains enough substance and structure for AI engines to recommend you in those moments that count.
In a world where most buyers get their answer directly from an AI engine and never click through to your website, legacy metrics like pageviews, gated downloads, and keyword rankings increasingly understate what's actually happening. A content program can be working, genuinely building trust and driving revenue, and still look like a failure on a legacy dashboard.
We built our measurement approach for the world buyers are actually in now, not the one traffic reports were designed for.
The Category Authority Index™ (CAI) is a 0 to 100 score that answers the question no other metric actually asks: will AI engines trust your brand enough, not just to make it visible, but to recommend it.
The CAI is an assessment of your on-domain content and presents how your content substance and structure is impacting AI recommendations in four distinct pillars:
How often AI engines will mention your brand at all in category conversations.
When you're mentioned, how often will AI engines link back to your own content as the source, not a competitor's.
How strongly will AI engines associate your brand with the concepts that define your category.
When your brand is cited, whether AI frames you as the leader or an afterthought.
A score alone tells you the temperature. The CAI goes further: every brand is classified into one of nine authority archetypes, each describing a distinct kind of authority gap and prescribing a different fix. Three examples:
High presence, low citation. AI engines know your name, but link to competitors for the facts.
Low presence, high citation. You're deeply trusted where you're known, but invisible everywhere else.
Low presence, low citation. Your brand is effectively absent from how AI engines understand your category.
Knowing your score tells you where you stand. Knowing your archetype tells you why, and from there, the plan follows three steps:
The CAI measures the authority presence across your domain and maps the plan to improve it.
The Category Authority Standard™ is how that plan gets applied page by page: a checklist applied to every asset, net-new and legacy, that governs whether it delivers real information gain and the technical structure AI engines need to extract and cite it.
The Zero-Click Measurement Framework is the three-stage measurement scorecard Skyword uses to measure real outcomes. The scorecard looks at Readiness, Influence, and Business Impact.
Each section builds on the one before it. Readiness without visibility is content nobody sees. Visibility without business impact is a vanity metric with better branding. The scorecard only means something when all three move together.
Most platforms tell you where you appear and how often. The CAI tells you why: it analyzes your content to determine whether it meets the standard for AI engine recommendations, categorizes your specific authority gap, and delivers a roadmap for improving your domain's authority. The CAI reveals whether you have a presence, trust, or differentiation problem. From there, our team audits existing content, fixes what's underperforming, and creates net new content to close the gap.

Visibility platforms are essential for tracking where you stand. The CAI is what turns that standing into a roadmap for building category authority.
